Service Description: The Nighttime Lights(NTL) Change Product depicts the spatio-temporal trajectory of the earth's nighttime lights, by visualizing changes in the extent and brightness of nocturnal low lights over two decades (1992-2012). The map product draws on decades of NTL data captured by the Defense Meteorological Satellite Program's Operational Linescan System (DMSP-OLS), in the form of annual stable night light composites produced by NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center. To achieve greater resolution and radiometric accuracy, the DMSP composites are co-registered with a June 2013 monthly stable night light composite from the next generation Suomi-NPP's Visible Infrared Imaging Suite’s (VIIRS) Day-Night Band. The final product therefore retains the spatial detail and dynamic range of the VIIRS product, as well as the decadal change information from DMSP-OLS images. In the image, warmer colors represent increasing development post-1992. Produced by: Christopher Small
